Denise Baxindine, LCSW

Hello! I'm Denise,
a counselor, encourager, teacher, and creative soul who loves to help others heal and thrive.

Starting the counseling process can be intimidating. I am grateful for every person who trusts me with the privilege and responsibility of being a part of this deeply personal work.

I have helped hundreds of clients over the past ten years overcome trauma, grieve losses, build healthier relationships, learn to better cope with symptoms of anxiety and depression, and generally live more vibrant, meaningful lives.

My Approach

I specialize in solution-focused therapy, and incorporate cognitive-behavioral and mind/body interventions into my work.

I am also an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) trained counselor, and use this modality (when appropriate) to address trauma and other areas where clients feel "stuck".

In our sessions, you can expect me to be very relational; I use empathic listening, humor, and constructive feedback to help you gain insight and realize change. The strength of the relationship you have with your counselor will most affect your success in therapy, according to research. My primary goal, then, is for you to feel safe to openly explore your inner world without judgment. Furthermore, I aim for our work to support you in making positive, lasting changes in your life. We will work together initially to set specific goals around what you want to get out of the therapy, and will revisit those goals periodically to ensure you are getting what you need.

My Clients

I work with adults dealing with anxiety, grief and loss (including loss of pets), trauma, relationship difficulties, depression, low self-esteem, and life transitions.

I welcome diversity and enjoy working with people of varied ages, races, religions, sexual orientations, and countries of origin.

Examples of goals I have supported clients in reaching include:
-thinking more positive thoughts
-learning healthier coping skills to manage depression symptoms
-building more meaningful relationships
-rebuilding a life after loss
-improving communication skills
-adjusting to life at college
-learning to identify and ask for what I need
-identifying and expressing my feelings
-clarifying my values and goals and what I want out of life

I currently accept Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Aetna PPO, Crime Victims' Compensation, and Workman's Compensation. Additionally, I accept private pay clients and can provide "superbills" to clients who wish to use out-of-network benefits for other insurance plans.

I speak Spanish as a second language, and am happy to work with clients who prefer to speak both English and Spanish in session.

My Background

I started my career as a teacher, and continue to teach in my work with clients. I believe in the importance of empowering clients with knowledge about any interventions used in therapy, and the research supporting those interventions.

My own journey learning to cope effectively with anxiety and my love of helping people eventually brought me to study social work at the University of Texas at Austin, where I attained my clinical license. At UT, I was the recipient of the Hogg Scholarship for Mental Health. During this time, I completed a counseling internship with SafePlace, where I received extensive training on the dyamics of abuse and sexual violence. Prior to starting my private practice in 2016, I was a bilingual counselor at LifeWorks, one of Austin's largest nonprofit agencies.

I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers, and love learning new techniques and theories in the field of mental health in order to continue evolving professionally and to better serve my clients. Specific areas in which I have received training include trauma focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, EMDR, motivational interviewing, nonviolent communication, and somatic experiencing. Personally, I have attended a silent ten-day mindfulness retreat, and enjoy incorporating mindfulness techniques for clients who are interested in exploring this practice.

When I’m not working with clients, I’m usually out walking my dog, exploring Austin’s food scene, running my ETSY side hustle, journaling, reading, surrounding myself with positive/supportive people, and generally just trying my best to practice what I preach and live a healthy, vibrant life.
